Clogged Drain Advice

Clogged drains are annoying and they can cause damage if not repaired. Here is a slow-drain fix to try before you call a repairman.

One of the many calls we receive at Household Hub is for slow flowing drains. Drains clog over time for various reasons: hair and accumulated debris down the drain or just a buildup of soap scum on the inside of the drainpipe. In Las Vegas and Henderson hard water can also add to the problem. When clients calls for such a problem, we usually suggest they do this first to save money: Try one of these two products commercially available in the local stores – Drano Professional Strength Foamer® in a gray bottle and Liquid Plumr Foaming Pipe Snake® in a bronze bottle are both effective at clearing slow draining pipes. Both products look like the bottle is split in two and stuck together with one cap. I use Liquid Plumr Foaming Pipe Snake® for my house. Wait for the sink or whatever drain is clogged to completely empty of water and follow the directions on the bottle and allow the product to work a few hours or overnight if possible. Flush with hot water from the faucet. My clients have found this to work consistently and I feel very good about saving them the expense of a service call. If it doesn’t work, that means there may be a more serious problem that needs repair. If you haven’t done so, you may want to use this product in the drain your washing machine empties into. That pipe is particularly susceptible to accumulating soap scum on the inside of the pipe and you won’t notice it until the water runs over.
